St. Marks KP Wins NDCA National Championship

St Marks KP

The St. Marks team of Ammar Plumber and Ansh Khullar won the 2016 NDCA National Championship at the University of Central Florida this past weekend.  They were a perfect 6-0 after the prelim and the #2 seed. They went through outrounds only losing two total ballots, finally beating Rowland Hall LG, the tournament’s top seed, in the final round on a 3-0 decision. Ammar was also 12th speaker and Ansh was 14th.

Ansh and Ammar asked we recognize the hard work of their coaches: Tim Mahoney, Jason Peterson, Collin Roark, Zach Burdette and Alex Miles.

Rowland Hall finished in 2nd place and top seed from the prelims.  Jaden Lessnick was 2nd speaker and Emily Gordon was the top speaker of the tournament.  The semi-finalists of the tournament were Westminster CK and MBA KR.  The quarter-finalists included Highland Park BD, GBS RS, Peninsula TW, and New Trier BK.

The top five speakers after Emily and Jaden were Dan Bannister (3rd), Payton Woods (4th) and Carter Levinson (5th).

The tournament was on the smaller side with only 68 teams by tournament start, but had a concentrated field of great debaters.  Nine of the top ten ten teams in the Coaches’ Poll were in attendance and twenty of the top twenty five.
