As a Utah native, I have a lot of love for the place. When it comes to food, it’s not the greatest location known on earth. Attending a tournament in Southern or Northern California, or Las Vegas would present you with much better options.
Given that, here are some of the things I love:
Breakfast — Near Alta High
Penny Anne’s Cafe
Address: 280 E 12300 S, Draper, UT 84020
This place is GREAT. It is a newly opened second location. They use sour cream in the pancakes, and they are some of the best I’ve had.
Other things to try include: The pot of gold: Fresh breakfast potatoes, onions peppers, breakfast meets and cheese, smothered with their homemade gravy. People love this.
Breakfast Nachos: They fry their own chips, and I think they are actually flower tortilla chips, which is different. Throw some chili verde, cheese, sour cream and eggs to order and you have a great non-traditional breakfast.
The other thing I like is you can have pancakes instead of toast or english muffin.
The Original Pancake House
Address: 17 11400 S, Sandy, UT 84070
It’s a national chain, but still a great breakfast. Bacon is very thick. German Pancake is worth the 30 minute wait. If you haven’t been to one of these, then it is worth your time.
Fast Casual — Near Alta
One of the things that makes Utah fast casual a decent option is our Greek take on the casual grilled hamburger joint. What you need to get is a pastrami burger, which is the specialty of most of these places. You really can’t go wrong with any of the three places I’ll suggest below. All food is made to order, and it really is a huge step up from normal fast food.
Crown Burger — The Original
Address: 9604 State Street, Sandy, UT 84070
Open today · 10:00 AM – 10:00 PM
Most food network shows go to this place, because it has a claim to being the first. It is very good, and I’d say MOST people would claim it’s their favorite.
One of the things that makes Utah a little different is that we eat our fries with a ketchup/mayo mixture. Every place has their own spin on it. I’m not particularly fond of Crown’s take on it, but it still crushes ketchup.
Astro Burger– My favorite
Address: 265 12300 S, Draper, UT 84020
This has my favorite version of fry sauce. The shakes to order and the french dip are also very good hear.
The bacon burger is very good, but if you are visiting I would still suggest the Pastrami burger.
Apollo Burger– Still, very good
Address: 529 12300 S, Draper, UT 84020
Very similar to the others, but their breakfast sandwiches are VERY good also.
For something other than burgers, fast casual dining also has Cafe Rio
Cafe Rio — Mexican
Address: 62 12300 S, Draper, UT 84020
This is a huge step up from Chipotle in my opinion. They make their tortillas in house, and they have a very flexible menu. They serve a good Horchata and other agua frescas. My personal favorite is their grilled chicken salad: A warm tortilla with choice of beans, rice, lettuce, pico de gallo, various salsas, grilled chicken, crunchy tortilla strips, cilantro and cotija cheese. Te best part is the tomatillo ranch dressing.
This is a Utah Original, but has now expanded to places like Las Vegas.
Yes, there’s “Queso” Phillips.
Bruges Waffles and Frites
541 E 12300 S
Draper UT 84020
This place just arrived in Draper as an expansion to the original store in downtown Salt Lake. It’s also been on several cooking shows and is very good. Their most famous sandwhich is the Machine Gun: A fresh baguette stuffed with 2 merguez (lamb) sausages, Belgian frites, Andalouse sauce.
They have a variety of aoli’s for their fries, and they have different waffles to try that can be dressed as a desert, a breakfast or something savory.
Address: 42 11400 S, Sandy, UT 84070
This place is trying to take the Chipotle idea to Pizza. The individual pizzas are prepared in a woodfire oven, and there are many varieties to choose from. My favorite is the Viola: House Marinara, prosciutto, blackberries, five cheeses and fresh basil.
The Crosta Formaggi is also very good.
I highly recommend this place. It’s quick and very good. It’s also reasonably priced.
Thai Food– Near Alta
I have two Thai places I really like, and both are of the hole-the-wall variety. My favorite of the two is NOT near Alta, but the one that is is also very good.
Thai Land Restaurant (I think it may be #2 or something)
Address: 126 12300 S #D, Draper, UT 84020
I’ve been there a couple of times, and it gets very busy during lunch. It may be worth calling ahead, but everything we ordered was very good.
Chanon Thai Cafe — In Salt Lake, but my favorite
Address: 278 E 900 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84111
I’ve had most noodle and soup dishes here. Nothing I’ve tried disappointed. They will ask you your heat level on a scale of 1-10. I’d say stick to two numbers less than you think you can try.
This is a must stop for me whenever I can visit home.
A little Classier
Mizumi Sushi Bar and Grill
Address: 8391 S 700 E, Sandy, UT 84070
Tiburon — I know CPS always goes here
Herbs & vegetables are grown in-house at this urbane American bistro with a meat-heavy menu.
Address: 8256 S 700 E, Sandy, UT 84070
Rodizio Grill — Brazilian Churrasco at 1/2 price of Fogo
Address: 600 S 700 E, Salt Lake City, UT 84102
It’s very good, and lunch is under 20 dollars.
Himalayan Kitchen — Our favorite Nepali and Indian food
Address: 360 State Street, Salt Lake City, UT 84111
