Next Years Topic Choices

Stefan recently sent out a message with topic finalists for next year:

_____ OCEANS

Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially
increase its non-military exploration and/or development of the Earth’s
oceans.

_____ MIDDLE EAST POLICY REFORM

Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially
increase

its constructive engagement with the government of one or more of the

following: Egypt, Iran, Israel, Saudi Arabia, the Palestinian Authority.

What do people think? Having lived through a High School Oceans topic and two college topics about the Middle East this seems like a no brainer choice for me- say no to oceans.

Here are some points

1. oceans are boring

Yea thats about all that needs to be said.

I think the middle east topic is a pretty good middle ground- it gets the better mechanism of the 2 (c-engagement) and will now occur at a timely point when there will be lots of new articles/developments to keep things interesting. Meanwhile

1. Oceans are boring.

  1. Oceans are not “boring.” And as a high school coach/league director, I can say that it will be a lot easier to “sell” an oceans topic to a wider community. I’m a little tired of all the international topics or hardcore political science topics. Oceans could be a good refresher that rolls into a huge novice year nationwide for policy debate, something we desperately need.
